Bhimashankar is the sixth incarnation of Lord Shiva among the twelve Shiva Lingas.This Maha Je linga is situated on a hill called Naam Hoa Naam Hill, about 110 km from Pune in Maharashtra.This temple is built in very ancient times but some parts of it are newly constructed.The construction of the top of this temple with different types of stones.Indo Arya rocks can be seen in several places in this temple.
There is a legendary story behind the establishment of this jyoti linga by Kumbhakarna's son Bhima.Puranas say that one of Kumbhakarna's sons was named Bhima.Bhima is the son of Bhima and Karkati.When Sri Rama killed Karba Karna, who would harm his sonless Dev, he decided to keep them away from their deception.
When Bhima grew up, he learned the cause of his father's death and decided to take revenge on the gods.After Bhima Boma became extremely powerful in the ocean, he got it.
A king in the form of Kameshwar was a devotee of Shiva. One day the king was worshiping the Shivlinga and Bhima saw him very seriously and asked him to stop his worship.When the king refused to listen to him, Bhima captured him and took him to prison.The imprisoned king built a Shivalinga and started worshiping there.As a result, seeing this behavior of King Bhima, he tried to break the Shivlinga in a more severe manner.But at that moment the winter broke and Lord Shiva appeared.A fierce battle ensued between Lord Shiva and Bhima in which Bhima died.The gods prayed to Shiva to be together forever. And because of the war with love in this Isla, this Jyoti Linga was named Bhimashankar.
There is Bima Shankar Temple called Kamalja Temple.And it is believed that the goddess helped Shiva during the battle with Tripurasura of this place.
Any time of the year can be chosen to visit Bhimashankar Jyoti's linga, a special fair is held here during Maha Shivratri.There are some more special Shiva lingas like Hanuman Pond, Gupta vimasankar Temple, Kamlaja Devi Temple.
